Pet Project Time: The Sleeping Beauty Lenormand

I love animated movies and shows, and I particularly love Disney movies, because the old pictures are so lovingly and painstakingly animated to ressemble living people.

My favorite movie of all is Disney's Sleeping Beauty. I watch that movie all the time and I own the special collector's edition with a glittering cover and a hardback companion book inside.

Sleeping Beauty is such a brilliant movie because of a) the gorgeous design and b) music by tschaikovsky. Next to my interest in graphic novels, manga, animated classics and Tarot I'm also a huge ballet nerd. I love ballet. I watch ballet all the time (youtube or actual theater, doesn't matter). I love tschaikovsky's ballets, because his Swan Lake is the first ballet show I ever watched as a small child and I fell in love and that's that.

I did ballet for a few years, but I wasn't talented or dedicated enough, being more of a bookish person than a dancer, so now I just enjoy watching pros. Anyway, the music and the amazing design with a gothic, symmetrical look is what draws me to the movie. Some people have criticised Sleeping Beauty for its lack of female initiative, to which I say: have you read blablas article on the three fairies and Maleficent really being the only important plot drivers in the movie? And have you considered that not the characters but the design and music play the main role??? Because they do. I once watched the entire movie and only paid attention to the beautiful backgrounds and the painstaking work that went into creating them.

Anyway, I love Sleeping Beauty to pieces and I would love to have a deck in the same style. Tarot is very detailed and right now a too-big project for me, so I mapped out 36 cards of Lenormand instead. Here are the first two rough sketches I did for the deck. The Prince and the Princess. I also want to do alternative cards, the Stranger and the Briar Rose/the Girl in ths Woods. What do you think?

I definetely want to include the beautiful curtains and bed a little more, which both don't come across in this sketch.

My workspace with other Lenormand inspirations.

Tentative coloration (unfortunately, I don't have many colored pencils. Originals will probably be done in acryllics.

Aurora looks kind of pale and lifeless in this one, so I have a long way to go until I grasp the Disney style fully.

As you can see, I chose the Kiss as the scene for the Man and Woman cards. I definetely want to keep the imagery simple and to the point, but still clearly reflecting the movie. It occured to me to add the song lines from the movie around the characters for these two cards to show their connection. Also, I like the fact that like this, the characters will look at each other if they are in one line or if the woman card is below! So you get extra love! I have some fun ideas to liven up the other cards, too. I wanted both the number of the card and the suit and number to be represented on the cards, while I the names would be left out, since they take up a lot of space.

The animal cards are going to be tricky, but I'll think of a clever solution. My goal is to print this for myself and some of my open-minded friends as a present. Wouldn't that be neat?

Blessings and balance ~
